The concept of Father’s Day was born by an Ms Sonar Dodd in 1909 in Spokane, Washington. Their father brought up Ms Dodd herself, with her five siblings alone, after their mother died in childbirth – a fact, which may have heightened her feelings of inequality in parental celebration. Ms Dodd toiled tirelessly for several years, determined that Father’s Day would be recognised and was delighted to see President Calvin Coolidge recognise it officially in 1924. President Richard Nixon saw the popularity of the festival in years to come and established it as a permanent date in the national calendar – to be held on the third Sunday of every June.
